Mastering the Juggle: How to Conquer Your ‘Mount Everest’ in 2026

You want a career change, but you also have a mortgage to pay. You have kids to pick up, or perhaps a volunteer shift that you aren’t willing to give up. In 2026, the “starving student” trope is dead. Today’s most successful students are those who study online while working, fitting their education around their lives, not instead of them.

At Kirana Colleges, we believe that you don’t need to find “extra” time to start your career in Aged Care, Counselling, or Community Services, you just need to use the time you have differently.

Meet your Teacher: Stephanie Cathcart

Mental Health and Community Services Specialist

Stephanie isn’t just a teacher; she is a genuine advocate for the sector who is dedicated to seeing her students succeed. With a deep passion for the industry, she focuses on helping dedicated individuals become the high-quality community service workers the field needs today. Whether you are navigating the complexities of mental health training or the diverse challenges of community services, Stephanie is here to support you throughout your entire learning journey.

The llama metaphor: A rewarding career path in Community Services

Stephanie shares a unique perspective on the role of a professional in this field:

“Community Services is a complex and challenging industry, however as clichéd as this sounds, it is also one of the most amazing and rewarding career paths you will take.

I tell my students every client has their mountain to climb and we are like the little Llamas supporting them up the mountain to reach their goal. For some clients, it may be to gain employment and get stable housing; for another, it might be to get through a day or even each hour without using alcohol or other drugs.

There will be a few tumbles; it won’t be easy and it may be ten steps forward, three steps back. We may be with clients for the full journey, or we may only work with them for part. But how awesome is it that we helped someone conquer their Mount Everest?”

5 essential skills for Community Workers in 2026

To help those clients reach the summit, Stephanie has identified the five essential skills for Community Workers that every modern worker needs to stay effective, safe, and compassionate:

  1. Empathy, empathy, EMPATHY!

Our clients come to us with complex issues and often in vulnerable states. It is hard to reach out and ask for help. Can you put yourselves in their place and approach them with compassion and empathy?

  1. Critical thinking and professional judgement

Our work is steadily getting more complex and as a result Community Services workers need to be able to self-reflect, make ethical decisions, prioritise safety for clients and ourselves and navigate an industry with limited resources.

  1. Trauma-informed support

This is now a vital foundational skill in Community Services work. Workers must understand how to create environments and support that are psychologically safe, how to avoid re-traumatisation and how trauma affects our client behaviour, communication and engagement with services.

  1. Resilience and managing behaviours of concern

Clients may express frustration, fear, confusion, or trauma through behaviours such as aggression, withdrawal, verbal outbursts, or refusal of support. Working with behaviours of concern can be emotionally demanding, unpredictable, and sometimes confronting. Resilient workers stay effective, compassionate and safe while supporting clients who may be in distress, crisis, or displaying challenging behaviour.

  1. Advanced communication and de-escalation

Skills in staying calm, safe de‑escalation strategies and managing high‑stress or emotionally charged situations improve rapport, reduce risk, and support more positive outcomes for clients experiencing distress, crisis, or complex needs.

How to study online: Embrace the "15-minute win"

If the “mountain” of starting a new qualification feels too high, remember that you don’t need a three-hour study block to make progress. The secret to flexible online study in 2026 is the 15-minute win.

  • The Hack: If you’re waiting at school pickup or on your lunch break, log in to the MyKirana portal and complete one small task or read one module section.
  • The Result: These “pockets of time” add up to hours of progress by the end of the week.

Flexible online courses mean the study fits your life, not the other way around. You don’t have to quit your “day job” to reach the summit; you just have to take the first step.
