Get started on the career of your dreams with a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care. NSW law requires that to work in this industry, you must have, or be actively working towards, at least an approved certificate III level education and care qualification. This Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care will teach you how to care for children, nurture their development, and make sure their environment is safe and supportive.

This qualification reflects the role of workers in a range of early childhood education settings who work within the requirements of the Education and Care Services National Regulations and the National Quality Standard. They support the implementation of an approved learning framework and support children’s well-being, learning, and development. Depending on the setting, educators may work under direct supervision or autonomously.

Course Requirements

To achieve a CHC30121 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care, a total of 17 units of competency must be completed 15 core units, plus 2 elective units.

Upon successful completion of this qualification you may continue your studies and undertake the following:

Entry Requirements

There are no education entry requirements for this qualification. Student’s must be above the age of 16 to enrol. Students under the age of 18 will require a parent or guardians’ permission to enrol.

Minimum Age

You will need to be at least 16 years old. If you are under 18 your enrolment form will need to be signed by a parent or guardian. Section 120 of the Education and Care National Regulations 2011 requires the approved provider of a centre-based service must ensure that any educator at the service who is under 18 years of age:

  • does not work alone at the service; and
  • is adequately supervised at all times by an educator who has attained the age of 18 years.

National Criminal History Check / Working with Vulnerable People Check

Students will be required to complete and pass a Working with Children Check/Police Clearance in the state or territory that they are working in prior to commencing child related work (this includes work placement). For information that relates to a specific state or territory please refer to or

Kirana Colleges student selection process is designed to ensure that you are enrolled in the qualification that best meets your needs.
Kirana Colleges selection criteria will take into account various factors when deciding upon which students will be offered places in the program including;

  • The students’ needs and desired outcomes
  • The ability and commitment of the students to complete the course;
  • Eligibility requirements listed in the applicable National Training Package;
  • Students existing ability in the ACSF core skills, (learning, reading, writing, oral communication and numeracy)

Students not meeting these requirements will be directed to more suitable qualifications or skill development programs.

To be assessed as competent in this qualification, students are required to undertake 160 hours of supervised work placement in a regulated child care service that caters to children aged between 0 -6. In all work placement settings, students must have a minimum diploma trained staff member supervising them throughout the work placement hours.

ACT Skilled Capital – for students residing in ACT

This qualification can be funded to eligible students through ACT Skilled Capital, a subsidised training program offered by the ACT Government. Skilled Capital funding is available through Kirana College’s Registered Training Organisation: Kirana Training Pty Ltd RTO ID 52247. Skilled Capital is an ACT Government training initiative, funded by the ACT and Australian Governments.

Queensland Certificate 3 Guarantee – for students residing in Queensland

Funding for this qualification may be available through the Certificate 3 Guarantee , a subsidised training program offered by the QLD Government.
