Hey there, future leaders in early childhood education! If you’ve been contemplating a career in child education and care, there’s fantastic news that makes this path even more exciting.

Government announces a wage increase for early childhood and care

On August 8, 2024, the Australian Government announced a substantial wage increase for the early childhood education and care (ECEC) workforce. While this began as a retention payment, the Fair Work Commission (FWC) is now staggering this 15% increase into the permanent Award throughout 2026. Here’s how it breaks down:

In the first year, eligible educators saw a 10% pay rise. Throughout 2026, the Fair Work Commission is locking in the full 15% increase as a permanent, legally protected part of the national award rate.

On top of this, there’s already been a 3.75% increase in award wages effective July 1, 2024. So, you can see why there’s a palpable buzz about joining this sector!

The 2026 roadmap to permanent pay rises

If you want to know how the staggered rollout affects you, here are the key points: The 15% increase is becoming a permanent part of your base salary through 2026. To ensure the sector stays affordable for families:

  • Providers cannot increase fees by more than the government-set cap for the duration of the rollout.

  • Teachers must be engaged under workplace agreements that meet the Fair Work Commission’s new standards.

  • The increase applies to Centre Based Day Care and Family Day Care services.

  • The Fair Work Commission milestones in March, June, and November 2026 ensure these higher wages are guaranteed for the long term.

A rewarding time to enter the field

For those of you looking to make a difference in young children’s lives, this is a fantastic time to jump into the field. Not only are you answering the call to support the future generation, but you’re also entering a workforce that is becoming increasingly valued and compensated fairly for the essential work that you do.

Take the next steps in your journey

As you consider your next steps in education and care, think about how you can contribute to this vital sector. With these wage increases now becoming permanent, there’s never been a better time to pursue your passion for working with children. So gear up, get excited, and let’s nurture the next generation together!
