Government Announcement and Wage Increases

On August 8, 2024, the Australian Government announced a substantial wage increase for the early childhood education and care (ECEC) workforce, providing a significant boost for those eager to enter this rewarding field. Starting in December 2024, there will be a new worker retention payment to support this increase. Here’s how it breaks down:

In the first year, eligible educators will see a 10% pay rise on top of the current national award rate. In the second year, that rate will rise to 15% above the current national award rate.

On top of this, there’s already been a 3.75% increase in award wages effective July 1, 2024. So, you can see why there’s a palpable buzz about joining this sector!

Qualifying for Provider Payments: Key Requirements and Timeline

If you want to know how providers can qualify for this payment and how it affects you, here are the key points: Providers must apply for this payment. Grant applications will open in October 2024. The wage increase will start in December 2024. To qualify, providers must meet these conditions:

  1. They cannot increase fees by more than 4.4% for the next 12 months.
  2. They must engage their staff with a workplace agreement that meets grant requirements.
  3. They must be a Centre Based Day Care like Mini Masterminds or a Family Day Care like Interreach.
  4. They must pass all funding on to eligible educators as increased wages.
